About this Course

Unit 1_Improving algebra teaching

In this unit, we introduce the focus areas for improving algebra, how to teach language in your maths class, and the three key strategies for teaching algebra.

Unit 2_Approach 1: Focus on the structure of algebraic problems

In this unit, we look at ways to teach learners about algebra and how to utilise algebraic representations. Our focus is on the structure of algebraic problems so we unpack what we mean when we talk about ‘structure’, and how we can teach this to our learners. You’ll engage with and practice some examples, and develop ways to help learners engage with algebra and develop rules around multiplication.

Unit 3_Approach 2: Analyse solved problems

Our focus in Unit 3 is on solved problems. We explore cognitive load theory and see why it is a good idea to use solved problems when teaching algebra. We also look at the importance of teaching the function and use of brackets, and you get to practice different scenarios of this.

Unit 4_Approach 3: Intentionally choose problem-solving strategies

In this unit, we continue investigating strategies to improve how we teach algebra. We look specifically at ways to get learners to choose the problem-solving strategy they want to use more. The unit focuses on the multiplication and factorization of algebraic expressions and we explore ways to teach this.

Unit 5_Collaborative learning

This unit develops the concept of collaborative learning as a pedagogical strategy to support learning in the algebra class. We explore ways to employ collaborative learning when teaching topics like factorizing expressions, linear equations, and equations with fractions.

Unit 6_Spotting potholes and avoiding roadblocks

In this last unit of the algebra course, we look at quadratic equations against the back-drop of roadblocks and challenges that learners experience in the Maths class. We’ll look at the recommendation for improving the teaching of algebra and see how you can pre-empt potholes and overcome roadblocks to learning.
