Teaching Practice Improvement
Teacher professional development in the Western Cape is critical to educational improvement and ensuring quality education in the region. The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) plays a central role in offering a range of professional development programs to teachers, school leaders, and support staff.
The focus of the Teaching Practice improvement unit is to train teachers from Grades R-12 to improve their content knowledge and skills in Languages (with a focus on reading) and Mathematics and to equip each teacher with new pedagogies to teach the curriculum effectively in the classroom. Opportunities are created during the training sessions for teachers to share their experiences and best practices.
- Continuous Skill Enhancement: Professional Learning Opportunities (PLOs) offered by the Teaching Practice Improvement unit aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of teachers to improve teaching and learning outcomes. These programs help teachers stay current with the latest educational practices and research.
- Curriculum Alignment: CTLI develops programs aligning with the South African national curriculum, ensuring teachers have the knowledge and resources to implement the curriculum in their classrooms effectively.
- Professional Learning Communities: CTLI fosters professional learning communities among teachers, enabling them to collaborate, share best practices, and learn from each other's experiences.
- Assessment and Monitoring: The institute provides training on assessment and monitoring practices, helping teachers design and implement practical formative and summative assessments.
- Technology Integration: Given the growing role of technology in education, CTLI offers programs to help teachers integrate educational technology into their teaching methods.
- Research and Development: CTLI also engages in research and development activities to continuously improve teacher professional development offerings based on the evolving needs of the education sector.
