The South African Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) promotes a balanced language approach. Therefore, decoding and comprehension strategies are both important in teaching reading. This course encourages discussion, debate and sharing of knowledge and experiences about reading instruction. In the breakaway groups, teachers will work in the language of learning and teaching (LOLT) and focus on sounds, phonics, vocabulary, etc. Learning opportunities will be created through sharing reading instruction in English, Xhosa and Afrikaans in one manual. This course will afford teachers the opportunity to support learners whose Home Language and LOLT are not the same. It opens a small window of opportunity to connect the known with the unknown. The course will strengthen teachers’ knowledge and teaching strategies on how to teach reading in the Foundation Phase.
