The focus of this course is on the teaching and learning of English as a First Additional Language (FAL), as well as developing teachers’ critical awareness of how to teach English FAL and how to assist learners to build on what they already know from their Home Language. This course is mainly aimed at schools where children will use their additional language, English, as the Language of Learning and Teaching (LoLT) from Grade 4.
The course will cover strategies to motivate learners to speak English and to provide different ideas to accommodate the different learning styles of learners.
Teachers will be provided with classroom management ideas and techniques for presenting and practicing the language and checking learners’ understanding of the language.
The course will focus on improving the listening, speaking, reading and writing skills of learners with emphasis on the balanced Language Approach.
